Help Choosing Software
June 22, 2006
by Kit Cassingham
Hello. I would like to purchase software for taking reservations, running/printing reports forms and information, etc which is also compatible with online reservation making services as well (i.e. can synch the info back and forth).
Is there anywhere which "compares" the softwares or reviews the softwares to help me make a good choice?
Thank you!

Welcome to the group. I haven't heard of any software comparison, but Steve may have. He'll chime in here soon and let you know what he's heard of.
A couple of resources you could check out though are Yellow Brick Road http://www.yellowbrickroadnl.com and http://www.paii.org -- they both have vendors who offer reservation software.
And if you haven't already, check out the other tread on reservation software.

Sadly I don't know of a single place that compares them all. Many of the companies offer little tables that compare themselves to the competition, but they choose the features that make themselves look better and the competition look worse, so it is not a fair comparison.
They all offer different features and they all try to push you to do the free trial hoping that once you have spent a month or two using their system and entering data, you won't want to switch, and quite often that is true. So what suggest is that you make a list of the features you want, and then you see how they all compare based on your criteria, not theirs.
Look for ease of use and understanding from the guests point of view. If they can't figure it out, how will they book? Also look at it from the innkeeper point of view. Do you have to switch back and forth between 20 different screens or is all the information easy to get to?
Webervations and SuperInn are probably the two most popular systems in use at the moment. So you may find it helpful to look at what features they offer to add criteria to your list, then start looking at the others. Also keep in mind that what is right for one inn, may not be right for another. I personally use SuperInn and it works well, but since it is entirely web based, it works fine for me with highspeed internet connection, but it is not so convenient for someone who only has a dial-up connection.
The good thing is you have lots of choices, the bad thing is you have lots of choices
If you have specific questions about features, I'd be happy to answer them. _________________ Steve Wirt Wine Country Cabins Bed and Breakfast in the Finger Lakes and Inngenious Bed and Breakfast Website Promotion
